CMIP7: A Global Collaboration to Refine Climate Models and Inform Sustainable Policy
Original framing: “Guest post: How CMIP7 will shape the next wave of climate science” — Carbon Brief
Climate change affects communities worldwide, but the impacts and responses vary greatly across cultures. By recognizing and valuing cross-cultural perspectives, CMIP7 can develop more effective and equitable climate policies.
The launch of CMIP7 marks a significant step towards refining climate models and informing sustainable policy.
However, this narrative omits the historical context of climate modeling, the structural causes of climate change, and the perspectives of marginalized communities. By integrating indigenous knowledge, addressing structural causes, and developing cross-cultural climate policies, CMIP7 can develop more accurate, equitable, and effective climate policies. Ultimately, this requires a fundamental shift in how we produce and disseminate climate knowledge, one that recognizes the value of diverse perspectives and knowledge production.
