HKU researchers explore novel approach to combat antibiotic resistance
Original framing: “How an HKU-developed eczema product could help fight superbug threat” — South China Morning Post
The overuse of antibiotics since the 1940s has been a predictable outcome of their commercialization and medical overprescription. Historical parallels include the rise and misuse of other miracle drugs, such as penicillin in the 1950s and more recently, opioids. These patterns reflect a broader trend of medical overreliance on single-solution interventions.
The HKU product represents a valuable scientific contribution to the fight against AMR, but it cannot succeed in isolation.
A systemic solution requires addressing the root causes of antibiotic overuse, including industrial agriculture, pharmaceutical overprescription, and weak public health infrastructure. Indigenous and traditional knowledge systems offer alternative pathways that emphasize prevention and holistic health. Cross-culturally, there is a need to move beyond the biomedical model and integrate diverse approaches to infection management. Future modeling must incorporate these insights to design sustainable, equitable, and effective strategies for combating AMR.
